Bender Fortress (also known as Tighina Fortress) is a 16th-century Ottoman fortification that dominates the left bank of the Dniester River at Bender, a city that now falls within Transnistria's administered territory. Built under Suleiman the Magnificent, the fortress was a major strategic military installation controlling the crossing of the river — a position contested by Ottomans, Russians, Swedes, and later the Soviet Union.

Charles XII of Sweden sheltered here after his defeat at the Battle of Poltava in 1709, before a subsequent Ottoman assault. The fortress passed to Russia in 1812. Today the fortress sits within military territory still controlled by Russian troops — the 14th Guards Army that has remained in Transnistria since 1992. Access is restricted, and the crumbling towers and walls are visible from outside the perimeter. Few fortresses in Europe carry such a density of competing empires in their stonework.
