Haus Spitteleck at Spittelmarkt is a curved commercial and office building in what was East Berlin — a prefabricated concrete structure whose distinctive rounded form responds to the corner site at the Spittelmarkt square. The DDR's Plattenbau (panel construction) system, usually associated with monotonous residential blocks, here takes on an urban inflection: a curved facade of repeated concrete panels wrapping a corner, acknowledging the street geometry while remaining entirely within the industrial logic of prefabrication.

Buildings like Haus Spitteleck are among the most overlooked pieces of DDR architecture — not the grand showcase projects of Alexanderplatz or Karl-Marx-Allee, but the everyday commercial and administrative fabric of the socialist city. They survive in diminishing numbers as Berlin redevelops, their concrete and aluminium systems no longer economical to maintain. Each one that disappears takes with it a piece of the spatial memory of the divided city.
