A monument to the Latvian participants in the revolution of 1905, when strikes and armed clashes across the Russian Empire were met with military reprisals; in the Baltic provinces the punishment expeditions that followed were severe.
1905 was a useful subject for Soviet monument-building, because it could be told as the rehearsal for 1917. The sculpture is built at the scale that reading required.
