The Vanšu Bridge crosses the Daugava on a single pylon with cables fanning out to either side, and opened in 1981. It was among the earlier large cable-stayed bridges in the Soviet Union, and the engineering was the point — this is infrastructure as demonstration.
Seen from the old town it frames the Academy of Sciences and the TV tower in the same view. Three pieces of Soviet-era construction, three completely different arguments about what the period was trying to say.
