The National Opera and Ballet Theatre opened in 1974 on the bank of the Neris, a wide horizontal block whose glazed front is hung with long vertical elements that read almost as drapery when the light catches them.
It is late Soviet public architecture built for a purpose that did not end with the state that commissioned it. The company still performs here, which is why this building has aged so differently from the Palace of Concerts and Sports a short distance away.
