The Swiss Cottage Library by Basil Spence is a striking piece of civic modernism — a public library wrapped in a dramatic folded concrete canopy that overhangs the pavement on Swiss Cottage High Road. The canopy's angular geometry and the exposed structural frame signal the building's public purpose from a distance, making it one of the most recognisable small civic buildings in North London.
Spence, better known for Coventry Cathedral, designed the library as part of a larger civic complex that included a swimming pool and youth centre. The relationship between the overhanging canopy, the transparency of the glazed facade behind it, and the solidity of the concrete structure creates a building that is generous to the public realm in a way that much civic architecture of the period failed to be.
