The Transdniestrian State University (TSU) is the main institution of higher education in Transnistria, a Soviet-era university that has continued to operate as the republic's primary academic institution since the establishment of the state in 1990. The university building is a characteristic Soviet academic structure — a functional modernist block designed for the practical requirements of mass higher education.

TSU operates in an unusual international context: its degrees are recognised in Russia and some other post-Soviet states but not in most of the world, a consequence of Transnistria's unrecognised status. Yet the university continues to train doctors, teachers, engineers, and administrators who run the state's institutions. The building's Soviet architecture reflects an educational philosophy that has been maintained with greater continuity here than almost anywhere else in the former Soviet space.
