Šilainiai is Kaunas's largest microdistrict, built from the late 1970s onward on the high ground north-west of the centre. Tens of thousands of people live here in prefabricated blocks arranged, like Fabijoniškės in Vilnius, around shared open space.
Districts like this are the real architectural legacy of the period — far more people lived in them than ever set foot in the palaces and ministries. They are also the part of the legacy that gets photographed least, because there is no single object to point a camera at.
